PROJECT: TYPE ONE

KONCEPT, DESIGN, BRANDING
2023
BACKGROUND
On average, two people a day are diagnosed with Diabetes Type One (aka T1), a chronic autoimmune disease where the body's immune system targets itself. There are no known methods to prevent or cure T1. Type one demands constant management, attention and calculation.

In T1 the pancreas stops working and the body is unable to create the hormon, insulin. Insulin regulates the amount of glucose in our blood, converting sugar in to energy. T1s need to inject insulin after every single carb which enters their body. T1 diabetics live with the constant risk of nerve damage, kidney damage, blindness, heart and blood vessel issues, skin conditions, and so on. Insulin and constant medical care is crucial for a T1 diabetic's survival.

In order to manage T1, diabetics need an array of medical gear; insulin pumps, dextrosol, glucagon shots, ketoacid strips, needles, wipes, batteries, glucose readers, sensors, ampuls, the list goes on.

While each individual has their own relationship and approach to their condition, the one constant for all t1 diabetics is the fact that they are dependent on and surrounded by a bunch of devices and packages that visually scream “hey, you’re sick”. Resulting in a constant reminder of ones non-curable condition, and in many cases feelings of discomfort, for oneself and/or those surrounding.

Type One originated in my own relationship to my diabetes. What provides me with some ease in my management, is having packaging and styling opportunities of my diabetes gear. The questions from my surroundings bare another tone of interest and curiosity, my ability to manage T1 on the daily is empowered with a, “those that get it, get it”- approach. Additionaly there is an ongoing trend in using T1 gear to monitor blood glucose in cardio trianing and health trends, regardless if you have T1 or not.
PROBLEM
T1 diabetics need their medical gear in order to manage their condition and reality. This creates a constant reminder of their condition. Available gear today, currently treats T1 diabetics as patients rather than fully formed, complex, stylish adults.

INSIGHT
We can’t prevent the reality of T1 diabetes, but we can affect its psychological impact. Personal style and expression allows us to create our own identity and brand. Thereby, creating a product which allows us to package and contain the necessary gear, we are able to provide T1 diabetes with a new association.

SOLUTION
By creating a product and system which lives in a fashion aware branding world, T1 is placed in a new context. Providing T1 diabetics with a new tone of voice and association, beyond plastic floors and hospital gowns. With a branding inspired by the complications and sensations seen while experiencing T1 we are able to educate others about T1.

STRATEGY
TYPE ONE, as a brand, is not created for only T1 diabetics. TYPE ONE is designed for anyone who need smaller packaging for their everyday accessories, however the main focus of TYPE ONE is that its created specifically to solve the necessary packaging for managing Diabetes Type One. Diabetes T1 is a detail in the seam, within a product available to any and everyone.
